I came across this post as I was thinking of how David was doing! David was my undergraduate research student in physics at SUNY Buffalo. He was an amazing young man then, incredibly focused, driven and well organized. It was such a joy to have him as a student in 1996. He was always pleasant and respectful, always very gracious and humble. We even wrote a paper together on his work. I was sad to lose him to philosophy, his other great interest at the time. I feel awfully sorry to hear about his untimely passing. My sincere condolences to David's family. I pray for the well being of his soul.

My deepest condolences to David's family. I worked with David for four years at Pitt-Bradford. From the outset, it was clear to me that he was absolutely committed to his students and to advancing the study of the natural world. Every fall and spring, and took the lead on organizing an environmental studies retreat at Allegany state park, an event that both students and faculty looked forward to and enjoyed immensely.
Interpersonally, he was always kind and collegial--providing support and encouragement whenever needed. Yet he never balked at asking tough questions when they needed to be asked, whether at committee meetings or when addressing administrators.
The Pitt-Bradford community has lost a great teacher and colleague.

I would like to say, "Thank you" Professor Schummer had a wonderful dedication and compassion. I am grateful eatful to be shown a whole new way to understanding the ethics of our environment and introducing me to Aldo Leopold. I can not say enough of how wonderful person and professor he was. He inspired me to choose a minor in Philosophy. Mr. Schummer will be greatly missed. My condolences to his wife and family, my thoughts and prayers are with you all in this difficult time.

One of the best and most influential professors I had at the University of Pittsburgh at Bradford. To say he made an impact on many students is an understatement. Opened my mind, and I am sure countless others, to various topics of both philosophy and environmental ethics. A true environmentalist. Pitt Bradford was lucky to have you, and I am thankful to have met you. Rest easy.
