Kathleen Ann "Kay" Dougherty
Olean, NY-Kathleen Ann "Kay" Dougherty of 209 S. 13th St. died Monday (January 4, 2010) at The Pines Health and Rehabilitation Center in Olean.
Born March 3, 1924 in E. Rochester, NY she was the daughter of Arthur W. and Lillian G. Archambeau Strapp. On November 16, 1948 at Our Lady of Lourdes Church in Arlington, VA she married John F. "Jack" Dougherty who survives.
Mrs. Dougherty graduated from Genesee Hospital School of Nursing, and received a bachelor's degree in Public Health from Syracuse University. She also earned a School Nurse Teaching Certification from St. Bonaventure University.
Kay began her nursing career during WWII as a lieutenant at a U.S. Army hospital where she worked primarily with paraplegics. As a registered nurse, Kay had been employed as a Public Health Nurse for the Cattaraugus County Health Department for 15 years, and as a school nurse for the Olean City School District for 20 years.
She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and she enjoyed reading, watching political programs and watching football, especially the Buffalo Bills. She especially enjoyed her home and spending time at the camp.
Surviving besides her husband are 4 children Francis M. (Kathleen) Dougherty of Rochester, Daniel P. (Jacqueline) Dougherty of Cuba, Brian T. Dougherty of Olean and Anne M. (Bruce) Bush of Ovid, NY; 10 grandchildren Kate (Dennis Basila), Matt (Alexandra) , Nate (Adrienne), and Molly Dougherty; Shannon (David LaGarda) and Pat (Amber) Dougherty; Jennifer Bush; and Kevin, Samantha and Kyle Dougherty; 4 grandchildren Nicolas and Mia Dougherty, Charley Dougherty, Jackson Basila and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 2 sisters Margaret Yawger and Evelyn Schrader and 2 brothers Wilfred Strapp and John Strapp.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Wednesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Thursday (January 7, 2010) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
