Marjorie L. Compfort
Olean, NY—Marjorie L. Compfort of 132 N. Union St. died Friday (July 4, 2008) in the Olean General Hospital.
Born November 18, 1946 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Robert and Elma Brooks Compfort.
Marge Compfort attended Olean schools and had a degree in art and music from Houghton College. Known for her commitment, she was an important voice in the local art community. She was the author of three chapbooks of poems and her works appeared in many literary, small press, and on-line journals. She was also a group leader in the creative writing workshops at the Mental Health Association in Cattaraugus County and often gave freelance writing workshops on her own.
A secular Franciscan, she once cantored at St. Bernard’s Church in Bradford and served the poor in her community in quiet ways. She taught art and substituted as a teacher in the Bradford Area Schools. She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church and was active in the church choir. She was an accomplished pianist who also wrote cantatas, one of which was performed at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean. She was a master knitter and seamstress and she loved her cats dearly. Those who heard her give individual readings of her poetry at the Olean Public Library or the annual Poets’ Picnic will sorely miss the lyricism and beauty of her voice.
Surviving are 2 aunts Betty Davis of Rochester and Marge Compfort of Florida; 1 uncle Ray Scott of Portville, several cousins and many dear friends whom she was very close to.
