“Loving Wife, Mom, Grandma and Sister”
Olean—Shirley L. Hicks of 616 Washington Street, passed away Wednesday (July 09, 2008) at the Highland Healthcare Center in Wellsville, after a brief illness, surrounded by her loving family.
Born March 18, 1942 in Colegrove Brook, PA, she was the daughter of Philip and Jennie Tompkins Vaughn. On November 22, 1958 in East Randolph, NY, she married Joseph H. Hicks, who survives.
Mrs. Hicks had resided in the Olean, Jamestown, and Randolph areas for a number of years prior to her marriage. After her marriage she had lived in Jamestown, and later moved back to Olean. She enjoyed collecting dolls, horses and butterflies. She also enjoyed music, especially singing with the family music group Gospel Roadrunners.
Surviving besides her husband is her stepmother Thelma Vaughn of Freedom; their children Joseph (Diane) Hicks, Jr., of Little Genesee, Clyde (Angela) Hicks of Jamestown, Wilford Hicks of Little Genesee, Marcy (Jacob Sweeney; E4 with the Arizona National Guard) Sweeney of Mesa, AZ, Brian (Angie) Hicks of Bolivar, Faith Dombrowski of Olean, Quinton “Tim” Hicks of Olean, Hope Smith of Kennedy, Cheryl Hicks of Olean, Daryl (Holly) Hicks of Olean; 26 grandchildren; 12 step- grandchildren; 19 great- grandchildren; 22 step-great grandchildren; 2 sisters Rose Vaughn of North Carolina, Bonnie Benner of Randolph; 3 brothers Walter Vaughn of Olean, Harold “Pete” (Ruth) Vaughn of Olean, Wayne (Robin) Vaughn of Olean; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 2 sisters Nina Brothers and Eleanor Green and 1 brother Edward Vaughn.
Friends will be received at Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Road, Today (July 11, 2008) from 12-2pm at which time funeral services will begin. Pastor Joe Smith and Pastor Dick Helms will co-officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery.
Memorials if desired can be made to the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
