Stanley K. Volz “Loving Family Man” Olean, NY—Stanley K. Volz of 319 N. 7th St. died Tuesday (August 12, 2008) in Absolut Care of Salamanca after a long illness. Born January 19, 1928 in Olean, NY he was the son of John and Nellie Keller Volz. On November 28, 1945 at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean he married Veronica Ida Cook who survives. Mr. Volz was a lifelong resident of Olean and he enjoyed his early working years, especially as a pinsetter for various bowling alleys in the area. He served with the US Navy from 1945 to 1946 and then served for the Co. I National Guard in Olean for several years. He had been employed by American Olean Tile Co. for forty three years, most of which were as the shipping foreman, retiring in 1990. He served as past president of the American Olean Tile Employee Union and also as past president of the Industrial Management Council. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany and his personal interests included golfing, bowling and playing softball. In the 1950’s he was a drummer and marcher for the Malta Marcher’s Drum and Bugle Corps. His civic interests included being chief of the Civil Defense Auxiliary Police in Olean for many years. In the 1960’s he served as an alderman for the eighth ward. He was a lifetime member of the Olean VFW Post 1619 and after his time as Commander and Treasurer he was awarded the Key to the City by Olean Mayor William O. Smith. His service to the community continued with his time spent as a member of the grievance committee for the City of Olean Assessors Office. He was the former commissioner of MUNY League Softball in Olean. It was during that time that he was adopted into the Seneca Nation of Indians as an honorary Tribal Chief. He was also active in the Olean Little League and the Olean Babe Ruth League as well as Olean’s Midget Football League. He was a Scout Master for Olean Boy Scout Troup 12 and was also a member of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks Olean Lodge 491. Surviving besides his wife of 62 years are 6 children David (Kathleen) Volz of Allegany, Kenneth (Pamela) Volz of Williamsville, Suzanne (Edward) Conhiser of Allegany, Edward (Barbara) Volz of Olean, Ronald (Betty Jo) Volz of Allegany and Diane (David) Fidurko of Allegany; 20 grandchildren; 4 step grandchildren; 30 great grandchildren; 3 step great grandchildren; 2 sisters; Dorothy (Dick) Robbins of Lancaster, CA and Gerry Sue (Carl) Hunt of Weston’s Mills; several nieces and nephews and a sister-in-law Sr. Gerarda Cook, OSF. He was predeceased by a daughter Alice Rose Volz on May 17, 1949; 2 sisters Betty Benjamin and Nancy Volz and 4 brothers John Volz, Frank Volz, Ralph Volz and David Volz. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Thursday from 7-9pm and Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday (August 16, 2008) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association of WNY 2805 Wehrle Dr., Ste 6, Williamsville, NY 14221, the American Heart Association or to the American Diabetes Association.
