Richard A. Young Sr. “Loving family man” Olean—Richard A. Young Sr., of 107 Virginia St. passed away Thursday (August 28, 2008) in Millard Fillmore Hospital at Gates Circle in Buffalo, surrounded by his loving family. Born June 18, 1933 in Otto, NY, he was the son of George and Eleanor Charlesworth Young. On June 18, 1955 at St. John’s Church in Olean, he married Nan M. Bergstrom, who survives. Mr. Young was a graduate of Cattaraugus Central School and of Ithaca College. He was an officer in the United States Marine Corps, serving with the 2nd Marine Division. After completion of active duty, he served as platoon leader, executive officer and commanding officer of the 29th Rifle Co., USMCR, during a six-year stint in the reserves. He was honorably discharged as a Major. He was employed as the Materials Manager of !McGraw Edison Co., in Olean and later was employed by Zippo Manufacturing Co. in Bradford, after 19 years, he retired in June of 1999 as the Vice President of Purchasing. While at Zippo he served as a director of the former National Association of Purchasing Management. Mr. Young was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, the Olean Knights of Columbus Council # 338, and Olean Assembly 4th degree Knights of Columbus serving as the former secretary and treasurer. He was also a member of the Allegany American Legion, the Penn Hills Country Club and served on the Olean City Conservative Committee. He enjoyed golfing, bowling, boating, and was an avid fan of the Buffalo Bills, Buffalo Sabres and the Boston Red Sox. He loved spending time with his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and enjoyed watching them play sports. Surviving besides his wife are 6 children Timothy (Kitty) Young of Pittsburgh, PA., Richard (Cathy) Young, Jr., of Olean, Michael (Carol) Young of Chesapeake, VA., Penny (Kert King) Young of Olean, Paul (Tammy) Young of Erie, PA., Holly (Don) Thierman Jr. of Portville; 14 grandchildren; 5 great-grandchildren; 1 brother Thomas (Sandy) Young of Cattaraugus; 1 sister Mary (Chuck) Senn of Cattaraugus; several cousins; including a special cousin Barb (Bob) Herrmann of N. Tonawanda, NY and several nieces and nephews. Besides his parents, he was predeceased by 1 granddaughter Jennifer Young, 1 grandson Kevin Young; 1 brother Kenneth Young and 2 great-granddaughters. Friends will be received at Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Road, Olean on Sunday from 7-9pm and on Monday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held on Tuesday (September 2, 2008), beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am in St. Mary the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors being accorded by members of the Allegany American Legion. Memorials if desired, can be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church or to the Olean General Hospital Cardiac Rehabilitation Unit.
