Obituary of Carolynn E. Clapp-Sutley

Carolynn E. Clapp-Sutley Allegany, NY—Carolynn E. Clapp-Sutley of 1148 Four Mile Rd. died peacefully Wednesday (September 24, 2008) in her home after a long illness. Born June 14, 1941 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Olin and Martha Haynes Perkins. On February 26, 1966 in New Orleans, LA she married Dr. George Wood Clapp, II who predeceased her July 22, 1983. On April 11, 1987 at the former Showers United Methodist Church in Olean she married Jack R. Sutley who survives. Mrs. Clapp-Sutley was a graduate of Oswayo Valley High School. She received a Bachelor of Science degree in 1963 from the University of Buffalo and later earned a Masters in Nursing in 1992. Prior to moving to Allegany in 1971 she had worked as a registered nurse at several health care facilities including Roswell Park Cancer Institute, Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, PA and also in Albuquerque, NM and Ft. Washakie, WY. She worked for 25 years as an instructor and later retired as an associate professor at Alfred State University. She followed that with 6 years as a clinical instructor for Jamestown Community College in Olean. Mrs. Clapp-Sutley had been a member of the former Showers United Methodist Church in Olean where she had taught Sunday School for 20 years. She was a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegany and also was a member of the American Nursing Association, the University of Buffalo Alumni Association and the Sigma Kappa National Sorority. She had been active with the Olean Community Theater and she enjoyed helping others by having served as a board member and registered nurse for the Olean Child Development Center. She also volunteered for Interfaith Caregivers and for Meals on Wheels. She was very active with soccer in Allegany and with the Enchanted Mountain Soccer Travel League. She was the former treasurer of Southern Tier Travel Soccer Association. Surviving besides her husband are her 4 sons Christopher (Ellen) Clapp of Wilmington, OH, Michael Clapp of Allegany, Patrick Clapp of Tacoma Park, MD and Daniel Clapp of Missoula, Montana; 3 stepdaughters Dr. Lynn (Anthony) Hartmann of Hillsboro, NJ, Laura (Steve) Webb of Cyprus, TX and Anne (Gregg) Blocher of Munster, Indiana; 5 grandchildren; 6 step grandchildren; 1 sister Patricia Ann Sackinger of Highland Beach, FL; 2 brothers O. Edgar (Ave) Perkins of Cooper City, FL and Stephen Perkins of Shinglehouse, PA; several nieces, nephews, cousins and 1 aunt. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Visitation will continue on Saturday (September 27, 2008) from 10am until time of services at 11:00am in St. John’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Gerard leFeber, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Allegany Public Library or to the St. John’s Lutheran Church.
