Obituary of Joseph Carnicelli

Joseph P. “Joe” Carnicelli “Devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather and friend” Allegany, NY—Joseph P. “Joe” Carnicelli of 3829 Old State Rd. died Monday (January 1, 2007) in the Olean General Hospital after a short illness. Born September 20, 1926 in Olean, NY he was the son of Philip and Teresa Rossi Carnicelli. On June 21, 1947 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany he married Winifred M. “Winnie” Mostacato who survives. Mr. Carnicelli was raised in Olean having left high school early to enlist in the US Navy in 1944. He served during WWII aboard an aircraft carrier until his discharge in 1946. In 1950 he re-enlisted in the US Navy and served aboard two different destroyers during the Korean War until 1954. In his later years he was recognized for his service to his country by the American Legion and the Department of Education with a certificate of completion of high school. He had first been employed by the former Socony Vacuum Co. and also by Daystrom Furniture Co. until 1950. After the Korean War he began working for Leo’s Market in Olean and later as manager/co-owner of Leo’s Market in Allegany prior to his retirement in 1986. He then began employment as a maintenance supervisor for St. Bonaventure Parish until his full retirement in 1999. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892. He was a life member of both the Allegany Engine Co. and the Allegany Knights of Columbus Council #1220, as well as a member of the Pulaski Club. He enjoyed many hobbies, including bowling, golfing, gardening, playing cards, doing puzzles and hummingbird watching. He was very proud of his Italian heritage and proud of the American flag. He was always participating in community fundraisers, especially as a ticket seller and routinely marched with the Allegany Engine Co. in area parades. He will be remembered as a person who was always there to help anyone in need and was an “Allegany man” with many friends in many places who touched people’s lives in many ways. Surviving besides his wife of 59 ½ years are 3 children Nancy (Brian) Jordan of Sherman, Kathie (Dave) Button of Haslett, MI and Dan (Dorene) Carnicelli of Allegany; 6 grandchildren Scott (Jen) Jordan, Sean Jordan, Michelle Button, Sharon (Ric) Bruce, Michael Carnicelli, Tony Carnicelli and his fiancé Ashli Souza; 1 brother Larry (Sandy) Carnicelli of Carefree, AZ; 2 sisters Clara (Gino) Malpiedi and Laura (Mike) Bysiek, both of Olean and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday (January 5, 2007) at 10:00am in St. Bonaventure Church. Fr. Gregory Brennan, OFM, chaplain of the Allegany Engine Co., will be the celebrant. Burial, with full military services accorded by the Allegany American Legion, will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Allegany Engine Co., Inc.
