Dorothy E. Atkins
Olean, NY—Dorothy E. Atkins, a lifelong resident of S. Second St. until 2004 passed away Tuesday (January 9, 2007) in Cuba Memorial Hospital Comfort Care Unit.
Born April 16, 1910 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Osmund and Ellen Gilloren Atkins.
Miss Atkins was a 1927 graduate of Olean High School and in 1931 earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from D’Youville College in Buffalo. She graduated from St. Bonaventure College in 1949 with a Masters in Education degree.
She worked as an English teacher at Olean High School from 1933 until 1959. She then taught sixth grade at the former School #1 in Olean from 1959 until her retirement in 1969.
She was a lifelong member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, the Bonatom Organization and the NYS Retired Teachers’ Association. After her retirement she was a twenty year volunteer for Meals-On-Wheels.
Surviving are 3 nephews Richard Atkins of Salamanca, Terrance Atkins of Rochester and Thomas Hart of Big Flats.
She was predeceased by three brothers Dr. Leslie J. Atkins, Francis C. Atkins and Dr. John J. Atkins and one sister Helen Hart.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Friday (January 12, 2007) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10:00am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church or to the Olean General Hospital Foundation.
