James G. “Kilty” Freeman
"beloved husband, father and grandfather"
Jamestown, NY—James G. “Kilty” Freeman, formerly of N. Arlington, NJ and Olean, NY died Thursday (March 29, 2007) in Memory Garden Adult Care Facility in Jamestown, NY after a brief illness.
Born April 15, 1920 in Glasgow, Scotland he was the son of Albert and Mary !McGarry Freeman. On July 17, 1954 in Holy Cross Church in Harrison, NJ, he married Margaret Kennelly who predeceased him November 20, 2005.
Mr. Freeman was first educated in Glasgow, Scotland. He immigrated to the United States in 1930 where his family settled in Harrison, NJ. He attended Harrison High School and was a veteran of WWII having been stationed in Hawaii with the US Navy. It was during his military service that he became a US citizen which was one of his proudest moments.
He resided in North Arlington, NJ for 51 years and was employed as a machinist with Singer, Kearfott Division, in Little Falls, NJ for many years until his retirement in 1982. He and his wife had moved to Olean in October of 2005.
He was a member of the East Newark, NJ, American Legion Post #36, a former member of Queen of Peace Church in North Arlington and the Kearny, NJ Knights of Columbus Council #402.
He will be remembered as a hard worker and steadfast provider for his family. He enjoyed his garden, his family and his work. He also liked playing soccer, bowling, playing cards and vacationing at the Jersey shore in summer. He especially enjoyed horse racing.
Surviving are a daughter Mary (Michael Kelley) Freeman of Olean; 1 grandson Ethan Freeman Kelley of Olean; 1 sister Alice (William) Stewart of Vero Beach, FL, and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 2 sons James Freeman in 1988 and Michael Freeman in 1991 and 1 brother Albert Freeman.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Saturday (March 31, 2007) beginning with a prayer service at 11:00am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 11:30am in St. John’s Church in Olean, NY. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany, NY. Memorials may be made to Hospice of Chautauqua County 4840 W. Lake Rd. Mayville, NY 14757 or to the Mental Health Association of Cattaraugus County, Inc. 502 N. Union St. Olean, NY 14760.
