Carl E. “Joe” Hakes Portville, NY—Carl E. “Joe” Hakes of 90 S. Main St. Apt. 209 went to be with the Lord Thursday (July 6, 2006) at the Veterans Hospital in Buffalo, NY. Born January 19, 1939 in Olean, NY he was the son of Rufus and Ardis Springstead Hakes. He was formerly married to Hazel M. Grimes. Mr. Hakes was a graduate of Allegany Central School and had served in the US Navy as an aviation technician. He worked for several years as a mechanic for the former Kayes Auto Sales in Portville and later for Mastel Ford in Olean. He was an avid fan of stock car racing. Surviving are 2 daughters Rhonda (David) Lewis and Jodi (William) Kunselman, both of Olean; 1 son Carl J. (Christina) Hakes of Huron, TN; 7 grandchildren; 1 sister Donna (Oakley) Phearsdorf of Allegany; 1 brother Donald James Hakes of Olean and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State St. Olean on Monday (July 10, 2006) from 1-3pm. Funeral services will immediately follow with Pastor Doug Travis of the Harvest Field Outreach Center, Olean to officiate. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor. Memorials may be made to the Portville American Legion or to the American Cancer Society.
