Obituary of Elizabeth Scanlan

Elizabeth J. Scanlon “loving mother and grandmother” Olean, NY—Elizabeth J. Scanlon of 539 Third Ave. died Thursday (July 20, 2006) in her home while surrounded by her loving family. Born July 5, 1921 in Olean she was the daughter of Daniel and Allienne K. Ward Hamilton. On February 14, 1946 at St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean she married Thomas C. Scanlon, Jr. who predeceased her June 21, 1981. Mrs. Scanlon was a 1939 graduate of Eldred High School and she later graduated from Mansfield, PA State Teachers College in 1943. She first taught in the rural public schools of Eldred Township, Bradford, PA, and the Millport, PA and Ceres, PA schools. She then was a substitute teacher for Olean, NY public school. She was a longtime member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean and its Altar Guild. She was also a member of AARP and was a former member of the First Methodist Church of Eldred. She enjoyed bowling in the Senior Citizens Mixed Bowling League and she was an excellent seamstress and avid knitter. Surviving are 4 children Thomas (Thongjun) Scanlon, Mary Elizabeth (Glenn) !VanDixon, James (Cynthia) Scanlon and Susan (Donald) !DeArmitt, all of Olean; 14 grandchildren; 17 great grandchildren; 1 sister Mary Allienne Hamilton of Eldred, PA, several nieces and nephews and a daughter-in-law Mary Ann Scanlon. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a son Daniel J. Scanlon in 2001 and a grandson Danny Scanlon, Jr. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (July 24, 2006) at 11:00am in St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, Olean. Rev. T. James Snodgrass, rector, and Rev. Cheryl Parrish, will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Olean. Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
