Gerald L. Holtz "A great Navy man" Norfolk, VA--Gerald L. Holtz, formerly of Portville, died unexpectedly Tuesday (August 15, 2006) at his home. Born June 20, 2006 in Olean, NY he was the son of Floyd and Kathryn M. Lee Holtz. He was married to Peggy Holtz who survives. Mr. Holtz graduated from Portville High School in 1985 and upon graduation he joined the United States Navy where he was currently serving on active duty. Among the many places he was stationed were USS Midway, Japan, USS Lamoure County, Norfolk, AFSC Norfolk, USS Wasp, Military Sealift Command Norva 206, Naval Amphibious Base Little Creek, NAS/NOB Norfolk, TAD Guantanamo Bay, Cuba and NAS/NOB Norfolk. He was awarded numerous medals and awards during his career with the US Navy. Surviving besides his wife are his parents of Olean; 1 daughter Kimberly Hill of Cuba; 1 stepdaughter Nikki Blackburn of Norfolk, VA; 1 stepson Chris Tatterson of Gloucester, VA; 2 grandchildren Kristen Staley of Norfolk, VA and Hunter Tatterson of Virginia Beach, VA; 1 brother Robert Holtz of Portville; 1 sister Laura Holtz of Olean; 2 nieces Heather and Nichole Holtz, both of Olean; 1 nephew Jason Holtz of Portville and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Funeral services were held at Little Creek Amphibious Base Chapel on Tuesday (August 22, 2006) at 10:00am. The family received friends at the Amphibious Base Chapel one hour prior to service and full military services were accorded at the chapel. Burial was by cremation. A memorial visitation will be held Saturday (September 2, 2006) at the Immanuel Lutheran Church on Fourth and Laurens St., Olean from 11am until noon at which time a memorial service will be held. Friends are invited to attend. Rev. Derek Cheek, pastor, will officiate. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the American Heart Association. The Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean is in charge of local arrangements.
