"Loving father and grandfather"
WESTONS MILLS, NY-- Arthur A. Levitt of 1316 Olean-Portville Rd. died Sunday (July 27, 2003) in the Olean General Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.
Born August 18, 1922 in Bronx, NY, he was the son of Samuel and Rose Rubenstein Levitt. Mr. Levitt was raised in the Bronx, graduated from Dewitt-Clinton High School, and received a Bachelor’s Degree in Psychology from Brooklyn College. He was a US Army veteran, serving in the South Pacific during World War II. Upon completion of his military service, he earned his Masters Degree in Psychology from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio.
Mr. Levitt worked as a school psychologist for several school districts including Richfield Springs, NY, Auburn, NY, and for over 16 years in Buffalo area schools. He then worked for the Rome, NY Developmental Center prior to his retirement.
Mr. Levitt developed a love of fine art and music during his early years in New York City, and these interests continued throughout his life. He enjoyed listening to performances and recordings of classical music and visited art museums regularly. His other interests included reading, gardening, opera, ballet, movies and fine cuisine. He continued to engage in these activities regularly after moving to Westons Mills five years ago. Mr. Levitt was a member of the American Psychological Association and The Friends of Good Music
Mr. Levitt was married twice. His first marriage, in 1960 to Marion Schwarz, ended in divorce. In October of 1987 he married Consuelo Lagana. He was a loving husband and he devoted himself to caring for her during the two-year illness prior to her death.
Surviving are 2 daughters from his first marriage, Karen (William) Kavesh of Philadelphia, PA and Andrea (Richard) Haley of Westons Mills; 4 grandchildren, Richard Haley, Meira Kavesh, Aaron Kavesh and Danielle Haley; a sister, Rita Feinberg of Bayonne, NJ; a niece, Laurel Feinberg of Fanwood, NJ; and a nephew, Alan Feinberg of Newport, RI.
Friends are invited to a memorial visitation on Tuesday from 4-6 PM in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A memorial service will follow at 6:00 PM. Pastor David Archer, of the Maitland Lane Free Methodist Church in New Castle, PA, will officiate. Memorials may be made to the Westons Mills Fire Department, the Olean Public Library or to Homecare and Hospice 1225 W. State St. Olean, NY 14760.
