Mary E. “Betty” Gasdick- “Olean native” Pine City, NY- Mary E. “Betty” Gasdick of 79 Rolling Acres passed away peacefully Monday (October 23, 2006) in Arnot Ogden Memorial Hospital in Elmira, NY. Born April 21, 1914 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of George and Mary Shea Hannigan. She was a member of an Irish family who first settled in Olean in 1853. She was the fourth generation to be raised on the 123 acre farm in North Olean until her father’s accident forced the family to move to their Sullivan Street home. She was married to Joseph Gasdick who predeceased her February 8, 1990. Mrs. Gasdick was a graduate of Olean High School and of Buffalo Normal School. As a longtime resident of Oakland, CA, she worked for many years at St. Lawrence O’Toole Catholic School, first as a volunteer, then as a secretary and later as a third grade teacher until her retirement. She was a devout catholic who recited the rosary daily and who had been an active communicant of St. Lawrence O’Toole Church and also of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean. Surviving are 2 children Marcia (Larry) Snyder of Pine City, NY and Mark (Maggie) Gasdick of Sammamish, WA; 2 grandchildren Julie Snyder of Jacksonville, FL and Kyle Snyder of Horseheads; 1 sister Ann Rhoads of Haddonfield, NJ; 3 sisters-in-law Catherine Gazdik of Oakland, CA, Mary Mishanec of Schenectady, NY and Rose Schreiber of PA, and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a brother George ”Bud” Hannigan; a sister Helen Hannigan and a nephew Michael Hannigan. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig, & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd.Olean on (Saturday 28, 2006) from 9:30am until 10:00am at which time a prayer service will be held. A mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:30 am in St. Mary of the Angels Church. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the Susan B. Komen Foundation for Breast Cancer C/O The Komen Foundation 5005 LBJ Freeway Suite 250 Dallas, TX 75244.
