Obituary of Sibyl M. Oakley

Sibyl M. Oakley "loving mother and grandmother" Olean, NY-- Sibyl M. Oakley of 2108 Hastings Rd. died peacefully Sunday (September 28, 2003) in her home after a long illness. Born August 14, 1925 in Olean, NY she was the daughter of Boyd S. and Grace Tyler Mitchell. On January 25, 1947 she married James W. Oakley who predeceased her May 29, 1990. Mrs. Oakley attended the Pleasant Valley country school and was a graduate of Hinsdale Central School. She was a lifelong resident of the Olean area and worked for the former Western Union Co. for a number of years, later becoming a homemaker where she enjoyed taking care of her family. She was a life member of the Hinsdale American Legion Auxiliary and served as its former president. She was also a member of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Olean. Surviving are 3 sons Alan R. (Linda) Oakley of Olean, Kenneth L. (Carol) Oakley of Batavia and Stephen J. (Michele) Oakley of Ischua; 2 daughters Carol Ann (Ken) Crawforth and Sharon J. (James) Kelly, both of Olean; 5 grandchildren Andrea Oakley-Fisk, Jason Oakley, Tricia Oakley, Austin Oakley and Thomas Oakley; 4 great grandchildren; 1 brother John (!JoAnn) Mitchell of Olean; several nieces and nephews; 2 sisters-in-law Betty (Don) Redding and Delores Bryant; 1 brother-in law Orren "Bus" (Mary Ann) Oakley and special friends Irene and Kirk Vollentine, Ploma Raub and Dorothy Oakes. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by 2 brothers Kenneth Mitchell and Russell Mitchell and 6 sisters Margaret Swift, Lucille Mitchell, Katherine Menendez, Elizabeth Stegner, Christine Oakley and Ruth Thomas. There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service to be held Wednesday (October 1, 2003) at 10:30am in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Rev. T James Snodgrass, rector of St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church, will officiate. Friends are invited to a gathering which will follow at the Hinsdale American Legion. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Hinsdale Fire Department or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
