Frank D. Johnson
Olean, NY-- Frank D. Johnson of 3219 Pennsylvania Rd. died Thursday (November 3, 2005) in Strong Memorial Hospital, Rochester, shortly after admission. Born February 21, 1922 in Franklinville, NY he was the son of Carmello and Crocifissa Saletta !LoVerde. On October 12, 1946 in Machias, NY he married Margaret L. Stanbro who survives.
Mr. Johnson was a 1940 graduate of Tenbroeck Academy in Franklinville. He attended Ithaca College from 1940 until 1942. In 1942 he enlisted in the US Marine Corps Reserve and served during WWII in the Pacific Theatre at Guadalcanal and Okinawa where he was honorably discharged as a corporal in 1946. He later completed a Health and Physical Education degree at Ithaca College and then began employment at the Olean YMCA from 1948 until 1951. During that time he did the work of laying out the Forness Field under the direction of Fred Forness. From 1951 until 1961 he worked at Clark Bros. Co. in Olean and later he worked as a salesperson at Sears Roebuck Co. until 1964. He was then employed for the NYS Department of Labor in Olean from October 1964 until his retirement April 30, 1987.
He was a charter member of the Franklinville VFW and was a former member of the American Legion in both Franklinville and Olean. He also was a life member of the VFW in Olean and was a current member of the Hinsdale American Legion as well as the Hinsdale Fire Department. In his retirement he enjoyed woodworking and selling his crafts at area flea markets. He also enjoyed dining out regularly with his wife.
Surviving besides his wife are 1 son Robert T. (Kathy) Johnson of Olean; 2 daughters Carol (Ron) Tesh of Spartanburg, SC and Christine (George) Smith of Oneonta; 6 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 sisters Frances Bink, Mary D’Agostino and Pearl Chimera.
At Mr. Johnson’s request, there will be no visitation. Private graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. Flowers are gratefully declined. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Hinsdale Fire Department or to a charity of the donor’s choice. The Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean is in charge of arrangements.
