James R. Lockwood "former politician" Olean, NY-- James R. Lockwood of 3063 Pennsylvania Rd. died Wednesday (November 16, 2005) in the Olean General Hospital after a short illness. Born February 28, 1931 in Olean, NY he was the son of Arthur and Luella Learn Lockwood. On May 24, 1952 at St. John's Lutheran Church in Allegany he married Barbara E. Shaffer who survives. Mr. Lockwood was a 1948 graduate of Hinsdale Central School and had resided in Hinsdale all of his life. He had been employed as a dairy farmer. He had also been employed in various political positions, including town councilman, town supervisor and Justice of the Peace, all in Hinsdale. He was active as the chairman of the Cattaraugus County Democratic Committee and also as the Democratic County Election Commissioner. In addition, he worked as a special assistant to the former NYS Assemblyman Daniel Walsh in his Albany office. For several years he served as the sexton of Pleasant Valley Cemetery. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Olean, and several social organizations including the Olean Elk's Lodge #491, the Olean Moose Lodge, the St. Stephen's Club and the Hinsdale American Legion. He was a former member of the Pulaski Club and was a life member of the Hinsdale Fire Department. Surviving besides his wife are 1 daughter Denise (John) Filjones of Allegany; 1 son Craig A. (Darlene Ringley) Lockwood of Hinsdale; 5 grandchildren Kimberly Lockwood, Jennifer Lockwood, Heather (Sean) Donavon, Jeremiah Filjones and Jonathan Filjones; 1 great granddaughter Kaleigh Donavon of Allegany; 1 great grandson Nolan Donavon; 1 sister !DiAnn (John) Yonker of Salamanca and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 1 son Arthur J. (Pauline) Lockwood in 1996 and 1 brother Rodney Lockwood in 1998. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 1-3 & 6-8pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (November 21, 2005) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM will officiate. Burial will be in Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church in Olean, the Hinsdale Fire Department or to the Hinsdale American Legion.
