MARETA RUGGLES CORNELL
OLEAN – Mareta Ruggles Cornell, of North 15th Street died of complications from Alzheimer's disease on Thursday January 29, 2004 at the Waters of Salamanca. Born in Harrison, PA on June 24, 1916 she was a daughter of F. Rexford and Nella L. Metcalf Ruggles. She was a graduate of Olean High School, class of 1934. On October 14, 1941 she married Lester L. "Corky" Cornell who predeceased her September 11, 1967.
Mrs. Cornell was employed by the City of Olean for the Mayor's office, and was director of the Cattaraugus County civil defense. She was a life member of the First Baptist Church of Olean where she taught Sunday school. She was active with youth baseball little league and was also a Cub Scout den mother. She served on the board of elections.
She is survived by one daughter, Carol A. "Scoot" Cornell of Shinglehouse, PA; two sons, Thomas (Kathleen) Cornell of Annapolis, MD and Steven "Topper" (Mary) Cornell of Williamsburg, VA; two granddaughters, Sarah and Catharine Cornell of Boston, MA; one sister, Ruth R. Carlson of Allegany and several nieces and nephews. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister Helen Welch; two brothers, Joseph Ruggles and Richard Ruggles and her dear friend Kenneth Leonard.
Friends will be received on Saturday January 31, 2004 from 2-4 and 7-9 at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 West State Rd., Olean where funeral and committal services will be conducted on Sunday February 1, 2004 at 2:00 PM. Rev. Daniel !McDowell, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Olean will officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery, Allegany. Memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Olean or to the Alzheimer's Association of WNY 1284 French Rd. Depew, NY 14043.
