James L. Boser Allegany, NY James L. Boser, 86, of 97 N. 1st St., passed away Tuesday (April 18, 2023) at his home after a brief illness, surrounded by his loving wife and children. Born July 16, 1936, in Olean, he was the son of James J. and Rosemond Cowen Boser. On April 27, 1957, at the former Lockbourne Air Force Base near Columbus, OH, he married Diane M. Dienstberger who survives. Jim was a 1955 graduate of Allegany Central School. Soon after graduation he enlisted in the US Air Force where he served honorably until his discharge in 1959. He worked for the US Postal Service for over 30 years retiring in 1995 as the Postmaster at St. Bonaventure University. Jim was very active as a volunteer in the community. He served in the Allegany Fire Department for 69 continuous years, having joined in 1954. He and his wife volunteered for the Meals on Wheels program for 25 years. He served along with his wife on the board for the Cattaraugus County Department of Ageing for 25 years. He served on the Cattaraugus Development Corporation board for over 8 years. He was a member of the Allegany 60-Plus, serving as president for many years. Jim also volunteered at the Allegany Rest Area on I-86 for over 5 years greeting travelers which was perfect for a man who never met a stranger. He also served as a member of the Allegany Town Board for 8 years until 1996 as well as serving on the Cattaraugus County Legislature for 12 years. He belonged to the Allegany American Legion Charles Harbel Post 892. Jim was a 3rd Degree Knight of Columbus and member of the Allegany Knights of Columbus Council #1220. Jim was a member of St. Bonaventure Church serving as a Eucharistic Minister and Usher. He was a devoted Buffalo Bills and New York Yankees fan. He enjoyed playing cards with family and friends, especially Euchre as a known “euchre legend” who would always make it on a wing and a prayer. There are many memories of family SCAT games and his poker game “prayer meetings”. He leaves behind his wife Diane of 66 years; 4 children Tim (Cheryl) Boser of Amherst, Cindy (Dan) Pikulski of Allegany, Jeff (Ann) Boser of Geneva, IL, and Amy (Kevin) Klimczyk of Frisco, TX; 11 grandchildren: Jason, Sarah, Paul, John, Jordan, Ashley, Jake, Taylor, Stephanie, Jamie and Tyler; 4 great granddaughters: Kaylee, Evelyn, Grace, Olive and his first great grandson is due in August; 2 sisters Mary Kyser of Oxnard, CA and Kathy (Jack) Porcello of Loudon, TN; 2 brothers-in-law Mike Crisafulli of Allegany and Dana Witherell of Portville, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a daughter Judith Ann in 1961, and 3 sisters Joan (Boser) Kelly, Gail (Boser) Crisafulli, and Rosalie “Bunnie” (Boser) Witherell and 2 brothers-in-law Bill Kelly and Merle Kyser. Friends will be received on Sunday from 1-5pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean, NY. A prayer service will be held Monday (April 24, 2023) at 9:30am in the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 10am at St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Michael Reyes, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery with full military honors to be accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. The Allegany Volunteer Fire Department will assemble for a service at the funeral home Sunday at 4pm. Memorials may be made to the Allegany Engine Co., Inc., 188 W. Main St., Allegany, NY 14706.
