Laurie & Mike, Irene, Jerome, Mark, Nick and the entire Family. Sending our sympathy and prayers as you remember your father, grandfather, and husband. I will fondly remember the way your Dad could describe basketball events and how his travel stories were so enlightening. His contribution to the Bonnies will long be honored. May God bring peace and comfort to you and yours.
All our love,
Tom and Karen Kalo Ghiardi

Our families go way back…
To start, we grew up in North Olean and our Stavish family was literally “attached” to the Sassone family (sharing a duplex) on Oak Street. We were able to walk everywhere in the neighborhood, especially to Transfiguration Church, where we saw everyone weekly. Mr. Sassone (Bob) always, and I mean always, use to stand outside after Mass and greet EVERYONE… until he was the last one left. He specifically use to call out my name… “Hello Paula” in his distinctive, raspy high-pitched voice (mimicking me as a young girl) to get my attention. He greeted me this way (my entire life) whenever he saw me—right up to the last time I visited with him at 89 years old. He would always ask me in Polish, “Jak się masz?” (How are you?) and I would smile as a child and say, “Dobrze, dziękuję“ (Fine, thank you), which I learned from my Mother, Josephine. I will never forget his big hugs, attention to everyone and kindness—all wrapped into one incredibly heart-warming man! He was bigger than life and always happily surrounded by people. I will forever hear his “raspy voice” calling my name… and smile when I think of him. “May you be at peace and walk amongst the angels in Heaven, Mr. Sassone—Until we meet again!”
Love, Paula Stavish Roberts xo

Paula, I just found this note….so beautiful. I can tell you one thing for certain, Dad loved you like family. He really enjoyed you because of the happiness you brought out in him, you brought sunshine to Dad. And yes, your “raspy voice” was the only voice he ever imitated. Whenever Dad ran into you in town, or at our church, he made a call to tell me. Thank you for this note, it was a total surprise. Dad really loved you and enjoyed your company Paula.

I first met Bob at Olean High School and had no idea of his illustrious career. Later I learned of his passion for St Bonaventure basketball and became a part of it. Bob touched so many people before it was fashionable or expected. He reached out to those in need and was a voice for kindness. He will be remembered for his values and enthusiasm.

Bruce, thank you for your beautiful words about my Father. Many people say his legacy is basketball, but I see bb as his tool to help people. Dad reached out to families, students, neighbors to help in any way he could. His legacy is just as you said..his values and enthusiasm. Ann Sassone Tommasino

My years at St Bonaventure were greatly enhanced having spent countless hours (and road trips!) with the basketball program and Coach Sass. He was an exceptional student of the game, a wonderful coach but even more so a tremendous individual. I enjoyed his humor and valued his friendship. He is directly responsible for opening my mind to the concept of appreciating the local Olean community as an extension of the student experience at SBU. May Coach Sass rest in peace and continue to make all his set shots.
Joe Witterschein SBU ‘82.

Joe, Thank you for your kind words about my Father. He loved basketball and SBU. I am glad you spent time getting to know Dad. Nothing brought him more joy than getting to know people and having a positive impact in some way…making life better for anyone he could help.
