Obituary of Vivian C. Carpenter

VIVIAN C. CARPENTER "Loving Mother, Grandmother and great grandmother" OLEAN – Vivian C. Carpenter, formerly of 11th Street, died Saturday April 3, 2004 at the Pines Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center, Olean Campus. Born in Falconer, NY on December 7, 1912 she was a daughter of Jacob and Grace Daugherty Bailey. On April 24, 1930 in Olean she married John N. Carpenter, Sr. who predeceased her May 10, 1966. Mrs. Carpenter was employed at Daystrom's during WWII. She was later employed as a Ward Secretary at the Olean General Hospital for 17 years, retiring in 1982. She was a member of St. Stephen's Episcopal Church and was an active volunteer for Interfaith Caregivers and the American Red Cross. She enjoyed ceramics, knitting and dogs, especially Boson Terriers. She is survived by two sons, John N. (Theresa) Carpenter, Jr. of Olean and William Carpenter of Bolivar, NY; four grandchildren and nine great grandchildren; a brother Clark "Dick" (Audrey) Bailey of Emporium, PA and three sisters, Daisy Haring of Olean, Violet Minard and Lois Rader, both of Emporium. In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a brother Junior Bailey and sisters Ruby Gropp, Edith Foster and Betty Housler. She was also predeceased by the fiancé of William Carpenter, Lt. Patricia Simmon. There will be no public visitations. Friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday April 6, 2004 at 1:00 PM at the First Baptist Church of Emporium, 424 North Broad Street, Emporium, PA. Rev. R. Scott Melott, pastor will officiate. Burial will follow at Newton Cemetery, Emporium. Memorials may be made to Interfaith Caregivers or to the American Arthritis Foundation. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 West State Rd., Olean.
