Catherine F. Gergel

Olean, NY     Catherine F. Gergel of 1831 Willard St. passed away peacefully Monday (April 16, 2018) in the Olean General Hospital.

Born March 20, 1920 in Olean she was the daughter of Patrick Joseph and Catherine Meagher Kenny.  On August 28, 1948 at St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean she married Michael J. Gergel who predeceased her April 8, 2013.

Catherine was a graduate of Olean High School and later of Westbrook Commercial Academy.  She worked at various businesses in the area including the former Thatcher Glass Co., Whelan Wholesale, and TH Printing Co..  She also worked for St. Bonaventure University and for Archbishop Walsh High School.

She was a member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels, a charter member of the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians and was a member of the Pulaski Club Auxiliary for 25 years.  In her later years she loved the company of her Cairn terrier "grand dogs" Bonnie and Clyde.

Surviving are a daughter Mary Gergel of Olean; a son Noel (Jodie) Gergel of Frederick, MD; a granddaughter Emma Gergel; a grandson Kenneth Louck; a cousin Catherine (Stanley) Wesley of Olean; several nieces and nephews, including Cindy Karl of Allegany and Margaret Grey of Montague, NJ; a dear friend Diana Peasley of Olean and 2 special friends Ann and Ricky Hassett of Westford, MA.  She held a special place in her heart for her "favorite boyfriend" Devon Wesley.

In addition to her husband she was predeceased by a sister Mary Ellen Stoeckl.

Friends will be received on Thursday from 2-4 & 7-9pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean.  A prayer service will be held Friday (April 20, 2018) at 9:00am in the funeral home.  A funeral service will follow at 9:30am at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels.  Rev. David Tourville, parochial vicar, will be the celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
