E. Theodore Hernquist, Jr.
Olean, NY E. Theodore Hernquist, Jr. of 113 N. 24th St. passed away Saturday (October 21, 2017) at his home.
Born November 10, 1930 in Olean he was the son of Elmer T. and Maggie Cavanaugh Hernquist, Sr.
After meeting his future wife Elizabeth A. Myers while each were serving in the US Air Force in Germany, they married on January 12, 1957 in St. Rose Church in Carbondale, PA. She predeceased him January 18, 2011.
Ted was a 1948 graduate of Olean High School and then worked for a while at the former American Olean Tile Co. prior to attending Rochester Institute of Technology. In 1953 he enlisted in the US Air Force where he achieved the rank of 1st lieutenant and where he flew the F-86 Saber jet as a pilot while serving with the 388th Fighter Bomber Wing at the Air Force in Etain, France.
He had been employed for 48 years for Dresser Rand as an engineer, retiring in 1995. He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Parish, the Olean American Legion Post 530 and the F-86 Pilot's Association. He enjoyed traveling to Florida each year for many years.
He is survived by 2 daughters Mary (Don) Chuboff of Watkinsville, GA and Anne (Bob) Rueppel of Middlebury, VT; 5 grandchildren Derek Chuboff, Sarah Chuboff, Kelly Chuboff, Katie Rueppel and Colleen Rueppel; 1 sister Joyce Ziegler of Kissimmee, FL and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to his wife he was predeceased by 2 brothers Jim Hernquist and Gene Hernquist.
Friends will be received on Tuesday from 5-8pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (October 25, 2017) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home. A funeral service will be held at 10:00am at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. Rev. Gregory Dobson, rector, will officiate. Burial, with full military honors accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team, will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
