Allegany- David E. McGranaghan formerly of Allegany, died Friday (March 25, 2016) at the Cuba Skilled Nursing Facility, where he had been residing for several years. Born November 18, 1924 in Olean, he was the son of Edmund Burke and Grace Granville McGranaghan. On December 17, 1957 in Baltimore, MD he married Louise C. Withgot, who predeceased him. Mr. McGranaghan was a 1942 graduate of Olean High School and attended the Rochester Athenaeum Mechanics Institute (now RIT). He then enlisted in the US Army in March of 1943, where he served with the 106th Division Signal during WWII in the Battle of the Bulge. After discharge he spent time with the Merchant Marines which took him on various assignments overseas. He reenlisted in the US Army in 1950 and served with the Third Division in North Korea until his discharge in September 1953. He then furthered his education at John Hopkins University where he earned a degree in Life Science in 1955. He was employed for ten years at Baltimore City College and then worked for several years with the Interstate Bridge Co. in Maryland. Upon his return to Allegany he worked from 1980 until 1990 for St. Bonaventure University in several departments including security, maintenance, and the mail room. He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Allegany. He also belonged to the Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge, the 106th Infantry Division Association, the Veterans of Foreign Warns and the Allegany American Legion. His favorite passions were listening to old time Appalachian country music, playing the keyboard, writing poetry and studying geology. He was a former member of the Allegheny Mountain Dulcimer Players. Surviving are one sister Joan Czark of Mt. Terrace, WA and several nieces and nephews. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by one sister Jean Blassey; and three brothers William McGranaghan, John McGranaghan and Hugh McGranaghan. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean, on Tuesday (March 29, 2016) from 4-5pm at which time a funeral service will begin. Rev. Bruce Taylor, will officiate with full military services being accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Circle of Honor, Olean. Memorials if desired may be made to a charity of the donors choice.
