Obituary of Gloria Leona Chapin

Allegany- Gloria Leona Chapin, recently of Eden Heights and formerly of Allegany, passed away Tuesday (October 20, 2015) at the Cuba Memorial Hospital. Born June 3, 1925 in Portville, she was the daughter of Charles E. and Bertha E. Evans Griffith. She first married Martin Rhow on July 30, 1945. He predeceased her on March 18, 1994. She then married Bob Chapin on September 2, 1995, he passed away in 2006. On September 26, 2007, she married John Spring who died in 2012. Mrs. Chapin was a graduate of Portville High School. She worked for AVX, where she retired in 1984, after 20 years of service. She was a member of the Allegany First Presbyterian Church and the Sixty Plus Club of Allegany. In her younger years,Mrs. Chapin was a volunteer for Meals On Wheels and enjoyed reading, knitting, crocheting, baking, making candy and spending time with her family. She truly enjoyed going to lunch in Portville with friends from ECHO and loved playing bingo and euchre with her many friends. When she moved to Eden Heights, she enjoyed the activities and her new friends. Surviving are her three sons John (Faye) Rhow of Jacksonville, FL, Thomas (Ruth) Rhow of DeFuniak Springs, FL, Norman (Kathleen) Rhow of Rochester; three daughters Barbara (Richard) Langborgh of Oak Ridge TN, Phyllis (Charles) Caruso of Ocala, FL, and Julia (David) Jennings of Kansas City, MO; five step- children Sandra (Robert) Foster, Robert Spring, John (Mary Ann) Spring, Sharon Melton and Carolyn Spring; twenty-one grandchildren; many great- grandchildren and great-great grandchildren; one brother James Griffith; several nieces and nephews; and a special companion David Wolfgang of Eden Heights. She was predeceased by her brothers Gerald Griffith, Harry Griffith, Charles Griffith, Robert Griffith, Lynford Griffith, Lynton Griffith and David Griffith; two sisters Margaret (Milgate) Potter and Geraldine Schoonover; and one step-daughter Linda Chapin who died in 2012. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road on Friday (October 23, 2015) from 2-4pm, at which time funeral services will begin. Burial will be in Chestnut Hill Cemetery at a later date and at the convenience of the family. Memorials if desired may be made to the Allegany First Presbyterian Church 44 N. 3rd Street, Allegany or to the Allegany Ambulance Fund, PO Box 95, Allegany, NY 14706.
