Michael J. Darrow
Allegany, NY-Michael J. Darrow of 2238 N. Nine Mile Rd. died Monday (April 27, 2009) in the Bradford Regional Medical Center in Bradford, PA after a long illness.
Born September 26, 1931 in Buffalo, NY he was raised by his grandparents John and Mary Pularski Puider. On October 31, 1953 at St. John the Baptist Church in Vandalia he married Gloria A. Amore who survives.
Mr. Darrow was raised in Buffalo and was a resident of Allegany most of his life. He was a veteran of the US Army having served in the Korean War with the 82nd Airborne Special Forces unit.
He was a member of the Olean Labor Local 621 Building, Heavy and Highway Construction Union and had worked on many local construction projects prior to his retirement. He was a former member of the St. Stephen's Club, the American Legion and the Holy Cross Club in Salamanca.
Mr. Darrow enjoyed reading about Native American studies and Homeopathic studies. He was an avid gardener and he loved bird watching on his own as well as with the Cornell Cooperative Extension's bird watching program.
Surviving besides his wife are 3 children Sheila Darrow of Allegany, Cheryl (Kenneth- his "favorite son-in-law") Collins of Batavia and Michael (Lori) Darrow of Allegany; 5 grandchildren Brianne Collins, Ryan Collins, Lyndsey Darrow, Jordan Darrow and Zachary Darrow; 1 sister Beverly (Charles Becker) Yuhause-Becker of Escondido, CA and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his mother Leona Christian; 3 sisters Lucille Zink, Melina Pacoz and Caroline Banach and his best friend Joseph Giardini, whom he considered to be like a brother.
A Service of Remembrance will be held Saturday (May 2, 2009) at 11:00am in the Cornerstone Chapel at St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will officiate. To honor his choice to donate his body to medical science, memorials may be made to the University at Buffalo Anatomical Gift Program, Buffalo, NY 14214.
