My heart goes out to his family who he loved dearly. I know he has left a big hole in my heart and I will always remember him and all the wonderful times we had, even if it was only for a short period of time. He was a fantastic person.

Please accept my deepest sympathy for the loss of your beloved father and grandfather, Leslie Badanes. This is the note I sent last evening to the faculty, staff, and administration of the Cattaraugus County Campus of Jamestown Community College: Dr. Leslie Badanes, retired professor from St. Bonaventure and my student this semester in Writing about Literature, died yesterday in an automobile accident. When Dr. Badanes approached me about taking the literature course, he was enthusiastic, excited, and genuinely interested in reading literature simply for enjoyment. In class, he was always prepared, asked pertinent and intersting questions, and simply and readily became part of the class. He was the ideal student in this way though both Diane Shepardson and I can tell you that there were times we had to remind him to complete this form or that form and hand in his paper work on time - just like many of our other students. Today in class when I told the students about his death, there was an audible gasp, that moment of disbelief becasue someone we know or see or sit next to in class is dead, and I have been feeling that disbelief all day. Please remember him in your thoughts and prayers.

Dear Minna, Kevin, Jennifer, and family, We are reduced to feelings; our words are still tangled up in the surprise and sadness we felt upon hearing the news--and, in the decades of memories we have of Les and all who loved him. As you know, our memories reach back to '68 when we all began as young and eager faculty families at Bonnie's. We were "kids having kids" and, given our mutual NYC/NJ roots, we had no immediate family with us--so, we became surrogate family to one another. Life has a way of separating us in ways we don't intend. We all turn to our respective obligations with the thought that there will always be time to catch up on the past. But, we've been tricked and we are left with the wish that we had had an opportunity to stay physically closer over the years--our thoughts were always with you. But, paradoxically, we are blessed because our memories are of those years when our spirits and hopes were highest. Les was such a wonderful part of that. His intellect and, of course, his very natural and genuine sense of humor were so wonderful to experience. To this day we continue to share the many hilarious anecdotes Les would relate. Often we were reduced to tears of hilarity. We could go on, but shouldn't. Not in this form. This note represents little more than a feeble effort to express our love for Les and his family and how much we wish we could be with you to share that love and help you deal with this loss. In time, we will reach out to you in other ways. But, for now, please know that we are thinkiing of you and that Les and each of you is in our prayers.... May time allow all the wonderful memories you have of Les to ease the pain you feel at this moment.... Peace and Love..... Pattie and Joe

I was so sorry to hear about Mr Badanes. Though it has been many years since I last saw him (I was probably in 2nd grade, 1975?), I remember him well as the person who could make my father (Joe Pastore) laugh until he cried. This always brought joy to me and my brothers as well, though I am not sure we ever fully understood the jokes and stories. Our family will remember him forever. You are all in our prayers.
