Hughes Family, I cannot begin to express my grief at the passing of Dr. Roderick Hughes. He was an amazing person and professor. He opened my eyes and shaped my whole life with his kindness, wisdom, and humor. He challenged me in ways I never knew were possible. He was a friend. I sat often in his office getting advice about life; and who could value it more than him? I left the Saint Bonaventure area in 2001 and traveled the world. There are so many wonderful things that he helped make possible in my life. Rod inspired me to change my life and, due to this, I am now a successful professional, husband, and father. I want deeply to thank him once again. My condolenses to you; his family. May God help you through this difficult time.

Dear Debbie and Family, I can only agree with everything Pat Dooley and and the family said about Rod today. I admired his intelligence, his probing questions, his "sly" sense of humor, and his never-ending devotion to his students. I took his symbolic logic course and worked with him on a few Clare workshops. He always challenged my thinking. But his courage to continue teaching these last few years was inspiring. I cannot imagine what a physical challenge it was for him to go to Bonaventure with backpack in tow. And what a wonderful support system he had from his devoted wife and children. Bless you all!

My heart has been heavy since hearing of Rod's passing. I feel terrible for Deborah and Rod's children and family. But I also feel so blessed to have known him. He didn't stand on ceremony. He was just "Rod." I told him after graduation that he was the best professor I ever had. His logic and ancient courses were among the best I ever took.He was also generous enough with his time to give me a tutorial on Plato. I had never met anyone who argued as well as he did. I also remember his terrific sense of humor. I also bet him that the Red Sox would win teh 1975 World Series. Rod and the Reds won. St. Bonaventure has lost a giant. He will live with me. I dedicated my philosophy book to all the Bona profs. Rod was first on my list. I know anyone who took his classes with an open mind would feel as I do. I feel for the department. I met Rod in 1955 in Sr. Eleanor's 6th grade class at Our Lady of Lourders Grade School. He made quite an impression on me. He said that his name was Roderico Hughse' and that he was an exchange student. Since I had just moved into the parish, I took him at his word. We went to Scecina together. We picked up our daily morning papers at the same place. After we paid on bill on Saturday, we went out to breakfast with another friend, Pete Magnant. Rod was very generous. He gave me his points for selling candy so that I could go on the trip to Chicago. He was a loyal friend. He claimedthat his kids were more attractive than mine. Now he died first! He always set the pace. As St. Paul said, Rod won the race! Now we'll have to see how he does in heaven. If there is a way to make a buck and to help someone, Rod will figure it out. Rod set a wonderful example for all of us. Thanks to Deb and his family for the wonderful care they lavished on him. We are better people for having known Rod. I will miss him! Love, Pat

As Pat Murphy expressed some of the unique qualities Rod consistently demonstrated, I also believe growing up with Rod was a peak and highly memorable experience. We went through all of grade school together and one year of high school before we went down different paths. Rod is also a tribute to his very special parents who I believe here his primary role models. At Rod's wedding reception, Mr. Hughes explained in vivid detail the need and power and importance of permitting all friends and family the opportunity to attend and renew their marriages. All my best to Debbie. their family, and each of his brothers and sisters. Rod lived life to the fullest with a big smile while ribbing others along the way.

I was so sorry to hear of Rod 's passing and hope you take solace in the knowledge that he had a wonderful impact on the lives of the people he taught. My favorite and often retold story of Rod came in my freshman year (1985) at St. Bonaventure taking his Philosophy class. At one point in the semester he made it known how confident he was in his one-on-one basketball skills and indicated that he’d be willing to bet any of the students in our class – a class that contained no basketball team members - for a grade (one letter grade higher if the student won and one letter grade low if he won). While he was in his early forties at the time, he said it with such confidence that I never heard of anyone taking him taking up on the challenge. For full disclosure, I took the opportunity to play him in a “practice” game one day (to see if I might have what it takes to beat him for a grade) and am pretty sure he beat me fairly easily. My thoughts are with his family at this difficult time.

My sincerest condolences to Mrs. Hughes and his family. Although I did not have Dr. Hughes as a teacher, I had the privilege of working with his son, Ryan, as his CCD teacher. I worked with 3 nine-year old students and remember Ryan with a smile. I was so sad to learn, years ago, that Ryan had died. Now I learn today that his dad has joined him. Peace be with his family today. They are remembered fondly.

I am so saddened to hear of the death of my favorite professor. I am a 1975 graduate of SBU who took every class that he offered. My friends joked that I majored in "Rod Hughes". I loved the way he challenged me to think .He made learning fun! May his family take pride in the great work he has done in the world.

Dr. Hughes was a great professor and I fondly remember his class 'Logic and Inquiry' back in the fall of 1993. His class at 8:30am was my very first class at SBU. I learned a lot in that semester and can still remember that class so clearly. It was also a class I shared with many who would become good friends and even the man I would marry! My thoughts and prayers are with your family.

I was a long time colleague of Rod on the faculty at S.B.U. He was someone I admired for his academic expertise. However, he was much more then an accomplished professor/scholar. He was someone who embodied all of the admirable qualities that make us human beings. The world is a sadder place without his presence. Go with God Rod.

Condolences Debbie, and to your whole family. I remember Rod as a great teacher and a fun guy. And you as being very kind to a freshman in art class. Best thoughts and prayers.

I was deeply saddened to hear the news about Dr. Hughes. I was a Philosophy major at SBU and took a class with him that really changed and moved me. I signed up for it because it involved watching movies and like any college student I thought watching movies for credit would be amazing. I had no idea how much I would learn and how much it would change the way I would look at films. There were many times I considered another major and countless times I have been asked on job interviews, at work or even cocktail receptions...why Philosophy? Well, Dr. Hughes your Philosophy of Film class kept me a Philosophy major and made me appreciate it. Thank you! My thoughts and prayers are with your family.
