Arthur R. Yehl
Allegany, NY Arthur R. Yehl, a resident of 3430 McClure Hollow Rd. since 1948, passed away Monday (October 27, 2014) at the Olean General Hospital.
Born October 24, 1924 in Allegany he was the son of Arthur and Annie Welsh Yehl. He just celebrated 68 years of marriage to Marion Hamilton of Olean whom he married in 1946 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany and who survives.
Mr. Yehl attended St. Bonaventure Parochial School and the Five Mile country school. He served in the US Navy during WWII from 1943 to 1946 and served as a gunner's mate, 3rd class. He was in both the Pacific and Atlantic theaters and received the European, Pacific and American Theater Ribbons as well as the Victory Medal.
He had been a self-employed contractor and also ran a dairy farm and later raised beef cattle. He also served as the Superintendent of Highways in Allegany in the 1970's.
He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Olean VFW Post 1619, and served as a volunteer fireman in Allegany for nearly fifty years. He loved to work in his wood lot and also play euchre.
Surviving besides his wife are four children Peggy (Armand) Burke and Dan (Ronda) Yehl, both of Allegany, David (Cynthia) Yehl of Parker, CO and Donald (Mary Ann) Yehl of Allegany; 11 grandchildren whom he loved dearly Laura (Martin) Tobias, Angela (Gregory) Castle, Leslie (Stephen) Watts, Eric Yehl, Jennifer Yehl, Adam (Jill) Yehl, Ben Yehl, Michael Yehl, Maria Day, Patrick Burke and Katharine Burke; 14 great grandchildren who were the joy of his later years; one sister Anna Mae Wenzel of Allegany; several nieces and nephews as well as grand nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a sister Marion Atcheson and four brothers Robert "Stub" Yehl, Emil "Pete" Yehl, Thomas Yehl and Joseph Yehl.
Friends are invited to gather with the family on Thursday (October 30, 2014) from 9-11am at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. A service will immediately follow at 11am, with Fr. James Vacco, OFM, pastor of St. Bonaventure Church, to officiate. Full military services by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team will follow. Burial will be in Mt. View Cemetery Veterans Field of Honor.
