Obituary of Carl Winnickey

Allegany- Carl E. Winnickey of 3147 Blinn Road, passed away Saturday (November 30, 2013) at the Olean General Hospital, after a lengthy illness.
Born October 6, 1926 in Allegany, he was the son of Edward and Louisa Hausknecht Winnickey. On May 21, 1949 in Allegany, he married Barbara Hull, who predeceased her January 5, 2012.
Mr. Winnickey was the oldest surviving attendant of the Smith Hollow one room school house in Allegany.
He was employed for the Pennsylvania Rail Road company, before enlisting in the United States Army. He served during World War II and was based in the Philippines. After his military career, he worked at the Olean Tile Plant, where he met his wife. In 1951, they moved to the Town of Tonawanda and he worked for many years at Bell Aerospace. In 1974, they moved back to this area and he began his employment at Dresser Rand in Olean, where he retired from in 1987.
Mr. Winnickey was an avid World War II reader and was very knowledgeable about the War. He enjoyed dancing at the Allegany American Legion and spending time with his family.
Surviving are two children John C. (Carol) Winnickey of the Town of Tonawanda, Carla (Mark Lent) Winnickey of Allegany; three grandchildren Heidi Whipkey, Joseph Winnickey and Edward (Crista) Ellis; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by an infant son David; three sisters Geraldine Frederick, Dorothy Sauer, Marion Sosna; and one brother Robert Winnickey.
Funeral services will be held at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road, Olean, on Friday (December 6, 2013) and will be private. Rev. Gerald leFeber will officiate. Burial will be at Allegany Cemetery.
Memorials if desired may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
