Olean, NY �" Roland Newell "Poley" Carter, a life long resident of Olean, passed away at home on Friday (July 5, 2013), 3 months short of his 95th birthday.
Roland, the son of Talmaldge and Nellie Carter, was born in Clinton, NC on October 12, 1918. During World War II he served in the 45th Field Artillery Battalion of the US Army that landed on Utah Beach, July 4, 1944. After the war, he returned to Olean where he was a member of the Army Reserve until his final retirement from the service with the rank of Sergeant Major. He was a long time member of the Olean and Hinsdale American Legion and the Olean VFW post.
He and his former wife June operated Carter's Market on West State Street for twenty years and he later worked over thirty years until his retirement as a butcher for the Park and Shop Service Stores in Olean. He also earned a Bachelor's degree in teaching and briefly taught cooking in the BOCES program.
He was an avid outdoorsman who loved to fish, hunt and camp and took to the water in his home-built kayak as well as a series of power and sail boats. He was a member of the Southern Tier Squadron of the United States Power Squadron as well as Pultneyville Yacht Club. In the winter months he was a snowmobile rider and later a downhill skier and a member of the former Wing Hollow ski club.
He is survived by his daughter Sherry (Ira) Goldman of Penn Yan, and grandchildren Sarah, David and Rebecca (Randy) Hayes. He is also survived by his long time, loving companion Nancy Greeley, her son John (Chris) and their children, Ashley, Amber and Britney as well as a number of nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Norman Carter and his sisters Vermell Bryant and Laura Walfrand.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Sunday from 5-7pm. Funeral services will be held Monday (July 8, 2013) at 10:00am in the funeral home, followed by burial in the Mt. View Cemetery Veteran's Field of Honor in Olean. The Allegany American Legion Ritual Team will provide full military honors.
In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations in his name are asked to contribute to the Cattaraugus County SPCA, PO Box 375 Olean, NY 14760, the American Cancer Society or to the American Heart Association.
