Obituary of Signe Johnson

Olean- Signe H. Johnson, 100, of Olean, died Tuesday (December 4, 2012) at the Cuba Memorial Hospital, after a brief illness. Born June 2, 1912 in Portville, she was the daughter of Peter L. and Teresia Lidback Johnson. Miss Johnson was a graduate of Portville High School, Class of 1930 and received her Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts Degrees at the University of Michigan. She also earned post graduate credit from Northwestern, St. Bonaventure and Temple Universities and SUNY Potsdam. She taught English at Portville High School for thirteen years and at Olean High School from 1950-1972 until her retirement. She was a life member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Portville, a member of Pi Lambda Theta, national honor fraternity for women in education, a member of the Portville Alumni Association and the New York State Retired Teachers Association. She has no immediate family members that survive her. In addition to her parents she was predeceased by four brothers Harry, Nelson, Leonard and Lawrence; three sisters Svenborg, Agnes and Selma. There will be no visitation. Friends are invited to attend graveside services of ashes to be held Saturday (December 8, 2012) at 10am at the Chestnut Hill Cemetery, Portville. Rev. Ivy Gauvin, pastor of the Bethel Lutheran Church will officiate. Memorials if desired may be made to the Portville Bethel Lutheran Church 79 Brooklyn Street, Portville, Chestnut Hill Cemetery or to the Salvation Army 502 N. Union Street Olean.
