Mary Lou Nixdorf
Virginia Beach, VA Mary Lou Nixdorf, of 5020 Lynnhaven Parkway, formerly of Euclid Ave. in Olean, passed away Monday (July 23, 2012) in her home after a long illness.
Born May 28, 1926 in Allegany, she was the daughter of Edwin and Frances Carroll McCabe. On August 21, 1954 in Allegany she married William H. Nixdorf who predeceased her October 22, 1991.
Mrs. Nixdorf was a graduate of Allegany High School and attended Westbrook Commercial Academy in Olean. From 1948 until the early 1950's she had worked as the secretary to the Dean of Education at St. Bonaventure University. She moved from Olean to Virginia Beach in 2008 to be closer to her family.
She had attended both St. John's Church and St. Mary of the Angel's Church in Olean and was active in many community activities over the years. She was the past president of the Bartlett Country Club Women's Golf League and was the past president of the Parent Teacher's Association. She served as a member of the City of Olean Drug Counsel from 1966-1967 and was the chairperson for thirty nine years for the Olean General Hospital Auxiliary sewing group. She also volunteered as an Olean General Hospital Auxiliary board member. In addition she volunteered for the March of Dimes, the American Cancer Society and for the Remedial Reading Program.
Mrs. Nixdorf enjoyed entertaining, bowling, golfing, gardening, crocheting, sewing and traveling.
She is survived by her children Maureen, Sharron Horner of Virginia Beach, VA and William (Stephanie VanDixon) Nixdorf of Virginia Beach, VA; a granddaughter Heather Callier; a sister Rose Schoop of Pleasanton, CA; a nephew Michael Schoop and her special friend Maggie Eidem of Olean.
In addition to her loving husband of 37 years she was predeceased by a brother Terry McCabe; a sister- in- law Marion McCabe and her first husband Bill Tenney.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday (July 28, 2012) beginning with a 9:30am prayer service at the funeral home, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Angels Church at 10am. Rev. Gregory Dotson, pastor, will officiate. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials if desired may be made to a charity of the donor's choice.
