George M. Day Allegany, NY-- George M. Day of 66 E. Main St. passed away Monday (July 23, 2012) at The Absolut of Salamanca. Born May 1, 1927 in Olean he was the son of George C. and Gertrude M. Lippert Day. Mr. Day was a 1945 graduate of Allegany Central School and attended St. Bonaventure University. He was a veteran of the Korean War, having served in the US Air Force from 1955 to 1958. He had been employed from 1959 until 1986 for the US Postal Service in Largo, FL. He later worked for the Olean Limousine Service prior to his retirement. He was a member of St. Bonaventure Church, the Allegany Fire Department, the Cattaraugus County Volunteer Firemen's Association and the Southwestern Volunteer Firemen's Association. He was a past member of the Allegany American Legion and the NYS Volunteer Firemen's Association. Surviving are a niece Sue Dieteman of Palm Bay, FL; a great niece Diane Vetter of Palm Bay, FL; 2 great nephews Brian Welch of Dunellen, FL and Patrick Welch of Lake Worth, FL; an uncle Clifford Day of Little Genesee, NY and special friends Lawrence Mills, Maria Mills and Robert Mills. He was predeceased by a brother Leon Sweitzer. Friends may call at the home of Mr. Day on Thursday from 2pm until 8pm. A prayer service will be held Friday (July 27, 2012) at 9:00am in his home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 9:30am in the St. Bonaventure Church. Fr. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Allegany Engine Co. Ambulance Fund.
