Virginia R. Martiny
Allegany, NY Virginia R. Martiny of 100 Clarence St. passed away Friday (May 25, 2012) at the Olean General Hospital, surrounded by her loving family.
Born February 4, 1916 in Allegany she was the daughter of Joseph and Rose Becelia Scarlato. On June 1, 1943 at St. Bonaventure Church in Allegany she married Charles W. Martiny who predeceased her July 31, 1982.
Mrs. Martiny was a 1934 graduate of St. Elizabeth's Academy in Allegany and later attended beautician school in Rochester. She first worked as a beautician in Olean and after her marriage, raised a family and worked with her husband at the family dairy farm on the West Branch Road in Allegany.
A lifelong member of St. Bonaventure Church, she spent many of those years in service to her home parish in many capacities such as the Altar Society, the Catholic Daughters of America, the Martha's and Bonafest. In 2011 the Franciscan Order acknowledged her selfless efforts by presenting her with the prestigious "Francis Medal".
Surviving are four children Mary Ann (James) O'Connor of Richmond, VA, Rose Marie (Robert) Bowen of Nipomo, CA, Charles (Maryann) Martiny of Chandler, AZ and Karen (Michael) Griffith of Olean; thirteen grandchildren; twenty three great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband she was predeceased by four brothers Anthony Scarlato, Louis Scarlato, Michael Scarlato and John Scarlato and one sister Louise Yehl.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Monday from 6-9pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (May 29, 2012) beginning with a prayer service at 9:30am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10:00am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. Bonaventure Church or to the American Cancer Society.
