Donald E. Smith
Cuba, NY Donald E. Smith of 1838 Wolf Creek Rd., formerly of King Street in Olean, died Saturday (April 9, 2011) at his home, surrounded by his family.
Born September 14, 1933 in Olean, NY he was the son of Lawrence H. and Anna E. Hadley Smith. On November 19, 1971 in Olean, NY he married Eileen K. "Sis" Greenman who survives.
Mr. Smith was raised in Olean and in 1951 enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. His military career spanned twenty-one years where he served in French Morocco in North Africa, England, Ohio, Montana, Thailand and New Jersey. He was last stationed in Grand Forks, North Dakota where he retired as a Tech Sergeant E-6. He then worked for twenty years for Dresser Rand Co. in Olean prior to his retirement.
He had been a longtime member of the American Legion and VFW, most recently holding membership in the Portville American Legion and the Cuba VFW. His hobbies included playing cards and he was a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan. He most enjoyed being surrounded by the love of family and friends through frequent gatherings at his home.
Surviving besides his wife are six children; Michelle Smith of Cuba, Craig Smith of Roanoke, VA, Debbie (Kevin) Myers of Jamestown, Diane Guay of Olean, Willie (Terry) of Jamestown and Mark (Cathrine) of Cortland; Sally "Sarah", whom he loved like a daughter; eight grandchildren Ashley, Jacob, Cody, Andy, Kristen, Stephen, Shane and David; one great grandson Maddox; one sister Lorraine (Don) Williamson of Durham, NC and several nieces, nephews, sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, including his brother-in law and best friend Chuck.
He was predeceased by two sisters Audrey Sherman on December 31, 1984 and June Abdo on April 1, 2008 and one brother Larry Smith on June 3, 2000 and a son-in-law Jack Guay on February 23, 2011.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (April 12, 2011) at 11:00am in the funeral home. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor of St. Mary of the Angels Church in Olean and Don's son Mark, will co-officiate Burial will be at the convenience of the family.
