Juanita M. Hillman "Beloved wife, mother and grandmother" Hinsdale, NY Juanita Osgood Hillman passed away on Monday (March 28, 2011) with her family at her side. She was born in Freeborn, Minnesota on October 29, 1914 to Edward and Pearl Beckwith Osgood. Along with her sister, brother and parents, Juanita moved back to the area to be closer to family. She graduated from Ten Broeck Academy in Franklinville, NY in 1933 and went on to attend Fredonia State Teacher's College. She graduated in 1936 and began her teaching career in the same one-room country school that her mother had attended as a child in the late 1890's and early 1900's. She also taught in other area schools of Ischua, Hinsdale, Allegany and Cuba. Mrs. Hillman retired from Cuba Central School in 1975 where she had taught as a first grade teacher for thirteen years. On July 3, 1939, she married Fred Hillman in Eldred, Pennsylvania. She and her husband lived in Hinsdale raising their family from 1947 until Fred's death on June 10, 1988. Juanita continued living in their home where she enjoyed gardening, sewing, crocheting and spending time with her family. After retiring, she drove for the Olean Meals on Wheels Program for 25 years. She also volunteered for the Interfaith Caregivers and the Olean General Hospital sewing group for several years. Juanita belonged to the NYS Teachers Retirement System and kept books for a short time for the Hinsdale Cemetery Association. She was an active member of the Hinsdale United Methodist Church and of the Hinsdale Guys and Gals. In 2005 she gave up her home because of health issues. She then went to reside with her children. Mrs. Hillman is survived by her children, Cortland (Janet Steele) Hillman of Unionville, Michigan, Cherlyn (Patrick) Savage of Olean, Kim (Susan Swier) Hillman of Cuba, seven grandchildren, Jennifer (Ron) Kennedy, Jason (Lisa) Gobien, Cory (Carrie) Hillman, Kam (Mike) Raykovitz, Chelsea (Stuart) Segrest, Aubrey Hillman and Colston Hillman, four step-grandchildren, Karen (Mike) Jackson, Mariann Savage, Mike Savage and Scott (Melanie) Savage, eight great-grandchildren, Bayly, Dawson, Peyton, Reganne, Daphne, Kiera, Taylyn, and Brendan, and six step-great-grandchildren, Steven, Susan, Erik, Sean, Nasha, and Mira. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Fred, her sister Arlouine Gerstung, her brother Clarence Osgood, sister-in-law Bobbie Osgood and brother-in-law Ray Gerstung. At her request, there will be no visitation. Graveside services will be held at the convenience of the family in the Hinsdale Cemetery at a time and date to be announced. Memorials, if desired, may be made to the Hinsdale United Methodist Church, Main St. Hinsdale, NY 14743.
