Allegany, NY Orma B. Carls of 220 E. Main St. died Friday (March 4, 2011) in The Absolut of Allegany after a long illness.
Born February 6, 1923 in Huron, NY she was the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel Rice Bloomingdale. On September 18, 1948 at St. Mary Magdalene Church in Wolcott, NY she married James R. Carls who survives.
Mrs. Carls was a 1939 graduate of Leavenworth High School in Newark, NY and in June 1944 she graduated from St. Mary's School of Nursing in Rochester. She worked as a registered nurse in the former St. Francis Hospital in Olean and also the Hamot Hospital in Erie, PA. Prior to her retirement she had been employed by Dr. George Cash as a Registered Professional Nurse Anesthetist for several years.
She was a member of St. Bonaventure Church and the Catholic Daughters of America. She also was a charter member of the Allegany Area Historical Association and helped as a children's librarian at the Allegany Public Library. She was musically talented and played the coronet, trumpet and bugle. She also was an avid sewer and knitter and made many beautiful sweaters, garments and blankets.
Surviving besides her husband are seven children Pamela Carls of Sunnyvale, CA, Richard (Mary) Carls of Allegany, Virginia Carls of Allegany, Elizabeth (Lawrence) Crisafulli of Arlington, TX, John Carls of Florida and Timothy Carls of Colorado; thirteen grandchildren; four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by 2 children Patrick Carls on and Mary Carls; two sisters Lucille Binns and Alma Sapp and a nephew Charles Binns.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean on Monday from 2-4 & 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held Tuesday (March 8, 2011) beginning with a prayer service at 11:00am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 11:30am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. Richard Husted, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
