Olean, NY Eugene "Gene" T. Daniels, Sr. of South Third Street died Friday (December 31, 2010) at Millard Fillmore Gates Circle Hospital in Buffalo.
Born April 25, 1931 in Olean, NY he was the son of Samuel Wallace and Cordie Shorter Daniels. On November 23, 1951 he married Lorraine Logan, who predeceased him on May 26, 1983.
Gene was a lifelong resident of Olean and had been employed as a construction worker with several area companies and as a member of the Labor Local 621 for 61 years from which he retired in 1993.
He was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church, the Christopher Columbus Lodge and the Olean VFW. He had been a member of the Duke's basketball team in Olean and had received the mayor's trophy for high scoring in 1947. He enjoyed walking, swimming and watching St. Bonaventure basketball. He was a Cleveland Browns and Brooklyn/LA Dodger fan and he loved western movies.
He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather and he and his wife were very giving people as they were foster parents to many children during their lives.
Surviving are his children Col. Eugene T. (Barbara) Daniels, Jr of Stafford, VA., Jane Daniels (Leon) Larrabee of Olean, Laurie (Harry) Robinson of Corning, Lawrence (Sharon) Daniels of Olean and Daniel Daniels of Olean; 2 step-sons Freddy (Gloria) Lord of Olean and Earl (Cheryl) Cash of the Bahamas; 11 grandchildren Jeremiah Kellen, Sarah (Zach McConnell) Kellen, Matt Kellen, Michelle Daniels, Leah Kellen, Marc Daniels, Andrea Daniels, Kishon Robinson, Gene Michael Daniels, Dache Robinson, Corinne Daniels and Jon Reed, who Gene considered as one of his grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild Miah McConnell; special cousins Jane Bizzard, James Hart and James Rahming: a sister-in-law Betty Pierce; nieces Deborah (Carl) Stokes, Theresa (John) Millian; nephews Doug (Deb) Daniels and Dwayne Daniels and several foster children Dewey Taylor, Richard Ashford, Kim Brigham and Reggie Venny to name a few.
Besides his wife he was predeceased by 3 brothers Doug Daniels, Francis Daniels, and Charlie D. "Chuck" Daniels and a cousin George "Smoke" Williams, all of Olean.
Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road on Friday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held on Saturday (January 8, 2011) beginning with an 11:30am prayer service at the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at St. Mary of the Angels Church at noon. Rev. Gregory Dobson, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be at a later date in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to St. Mary of the Angels Church or to a charity of the donor's choice.
