Fr. Daniel A. Hurley, OFM
St. Bonaventure, NY--Fr. Daniel A. Hurley, OFM, 90, of the Franciscan Friary, passed away Saturday (March 13, 2010) at the Olean General Hospital during emergency surgery.
Fr. Dan was born and raised in Albany, NY, graduating from Vincentian Institute in 1936. He entered St. Bonaventure College (later University) and graduated in 1940 with a B.A. degree in the classics. Several months after graduation Dan entered the Franciscan Novitiate, was solemnly professed in 1944 and ordained on June 17, 1945. Dan received his Master's degree from St. Bonaventure University in 1946.
During Dan's long Franciscan life he worked in one of Holy Name Province's educational institutions as a classroom instructor, director of Franciscan students in formation and director of college students. Mingled with this academic work were periods of work in one of the parishes staffed by friars of Holy Name Province. Dan first came to St. Bonaventure University in 1955 and was there until 1961. After some time at Siena College in Loudonville, NY and Holy Name College in Washington, DC, Dan returned to St. Bonaventure to minister there until he retired from teaching in June, 1990; He then started working in Campus Ministry. Dan was also chaplain of the National Alumni Board for 30 years.
Dan Hurley was one of the first to team up with Fr. Dan Riley, OFM in 1983 in the new Mt. Irenaeus ministry which has grown considerably since then. His inspiration, gentle chiding, and always open personality have been a source of inspiration for countless people.
Fr. Dan Hurley ("Hurls') was a quiet, gentle and prominent presence in the lives of so many people during his sixty-five years of ministry. May God grant him peace.
Fr. Dan is survived by a sister-in-law Mary Hurley; 5 nephews Richard Hurley, John Hurley, Robert Hurley, Stephen Hurley and Charles Hurley; 8 nieces Ann McKenna, Jane Thomas, Peggy Reilly, Kathleen Kittleman, Eileen McAvoy, Betty Ann Sobol, Mary Helen Stuart and Maripat Pilcher and several great nieces and great nephews.
Visitation will be held Wednesday at the St. Bonaventure University Chapel from 2-4 & 7-9pm. A Concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be held Thursday (March 18, 2010) at 10:00am in the Chapel. Fr. John O'Connor, OFM, Minister Provincial of Holy Name Province, will be the principal celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Allegany. A vigil wake service will be held Wednesday evening at 8pm in the chapel.
