Obituary of Robert McConnaughey

Allegany-- Robert E. "Twig" McConnaughey, of 3974 Rte 417, Colonial Village, passed away Monday (July 20, 2009) at his home, surrounded by his family. Born April 10, 1942 in Buffalo, he was the son of the late James and Marguerite Potter McConnaughey. On May 12, 1961 in Holland, NY, he married Katherine Szymanski, who survives. Mr. McConnaughey was a self employed contractor for 25 years. Later, he owned and operated "The Plant" in Olean for 15 years, until his retirement. "Twig" was a life time member of the N.R.A, the Olean Rod and Gun Club, St. Stephen's Club and a social member of the Olean V.F.W Post #1619. He also enjoyed hunting, whitewater rafting and NASCAR. In his earlier years, "Twig" raced stock cars at Holland and Olean raceways. Surviving besides his wife, are his son Allen McConnaughey of Olean; a daughter Julie McConnaughey of Hinsdale; a daughter-in-law Eileen McConnaughey of Allegany; 8 grandchildren Angela Damboise, Krista McConnaughey, Michelle McConnaughey, Mallory Franzen, Nicholas McConnaughey, Jeremy Sturm, Katie and Julia McConnaughey; 3 great-grandchildren Alexis, Kylie, Olivia; a brother George (Dolly) McConnaughey; and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by a son Thomas McConnaughey and a sister Joyce Barber. Friends will be received at the Casey, Halwig and Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Road on Wednesday from 2-4 and 7-9pm. Funeral services will be held on Thursday (July 23, 2009) at 11am at the funeral home. Rev. Richard Long, Pastor of Hillside Wesleyan Church, in Olean will officiate. Burial will take place at the convenience of the family. Memorials if desired may be made to the Allegany Volunteer Fire Department or to HomeCare and Hospice 1225 W. State Street, Olean, or to the Charity of the donor's choice.
