Sylvia M. Hoffman
Allegany, NY Sylvia M. Hoffman, 80, of 3095 Smith Hollow Rd., passed away unexpectedly Thursday (August 19, 2021) at the Olean General Hospital, with her family by her side.
Born December 24, 1940 in Hudson, she was the daughter of Robert and Sylvia Berry Peasley. On May 7, 1960 at the former Sacred Heart Church in Portville, she married James L. Hoffman who predeceased her on September 7, 2020.
Sylvia was a graduate of Portville Central School. She first worked for the American Red Cross, then went to BOCES for her LPN and began working as a nurse for the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse and for the former St. Francis Hospital. She then worked for years for Dr. Richard L. Scott, DPM and later for Dr. Puneet Chahal, DPM, both in Olean. Even at the retired age of 80, she was strongly entertaining the notion of entering back into her field of expertise, to which many would not have been surprised.
She loved her family, especially her grandchildren, and they were always a part of her busy household. She also loved her German Shephard dogs over the years, with Zeus being her current special pal. She was an avid Buffalo Bills fan and was a longtime season ticket holder. Sylvia was also a member of St. Bonaventure Church where she had served as a Eucharistic Minister.
She is survived by 1 son Robert (Gina Coletti) Hoffman of Olean; 1 daughter Lori Hoffman of Orchard Park; 7 grandchildren Jessica Shaffer, Michael (Lisa) Grimes, Cara (Jamie) Grimes-Reagan, Bradley Witter, Kaytie (John) Bennett, Kyle (Shauna) Hoffman, Nolan (Abby Hill) Hoffman and Beth (Brian) Buzzendore; 5 great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by her daughter, Lynn Witter on August 23, 2006; 3 sisters Luella Frances, Carmelita Pauly Crandall and Lillian Snopkowski; 1 brother James Pike Jr. and a special friend Martha Luce.
Visitation will be on Tuesday from 4-7pm and on Wednesday from 5-8pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A prayer service will be held Thursday (August 26, 2021) at 9:30am in the funeral home. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 10am in St. Bonaventure Church. Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
Memorials, if desired, may be made to the St. Elizabeth Motherhouse, 115 E. Main St., Allegany, NY 14706 or to a charity of the donor’s choice.
