Rose L. Grego

Olean, NY     Rose Lucille Rubino Grego, 101, formerly of Olean and Bradford, passed away Sunday (August 27, 2017) at the Bradford Ecumenical Home in Bradford after a long illness.

Born May 19, 1916 in Bradford, PA she was the daughter of Michael and Mary Pascarella Rubino.  On July 22, 1944 at St. Francis Church in Hillsgrove, RI she married her husband of almost 68 years, James J. Grego, Sr..  He predeceased her on April 23, 2012.

Rose attended Olean Public School #10, Olean High School, Westbrook Academy, and Geneseo State College of Arts.  She worked at the Bulova Watch Co. in Providence, R.I., was a dental technician at General Hospital at the Army Air Base in Charleston, SC and was an elevator operator at the former First National Bank and Exchange National Bank in Olean.

She was a member of St. Mary of the Angels Church until she moved to Cranberry Rd. in October of 1959 when she became a member of St. Bonaventure Parish.  She was active with the Altar and Rosary Society and the BonaFest and church maintenance committees.  She served as chairperson of the Community Directory of Catholic Charities Appeal from 1979 to 1995 and was the recipient of the "St. Joseph the Worker" Lay Award from the late Bishop Edward Head of Buffalo.  She also served several years as a volunteer for the Red Cross Bloodmobile and for the Special Olympics held at St. Bonaventure University.  Additionally she enjoyed membership in Sixty Plus of Allegany, was the past president of the Ladies Auxiliary of Allegany Council #1220 Knights of Columbus, and from 1988 to 2011 she served with her husband on the Sunshine and Bereavement committee for the Dresser Clark Office of Retirees.

Rose enjoyed dancing, especially at the church festivals, playing solitaire, bowling, working on crossword puzzles, walking at the Olean Center Mall and the old Allegany High School gym, and visiting patients at the hospital and nursing homes.  She especially loved being with her family.  She entered Eden Heights in Olean in June of 2012 and moved to the Bradford Ecumenical Home in May 2014 where she presently resided.

She is survived by 3 sons James (Rosemary) Grego, Jr. of Hilton, John Grego of Rochester and Robert (Patricia) Grego of Brockport/The Villages, FL; a daughter Pamela (John) Caldwell of Portville; 10 grandchildren; 2 step-grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren plus one on the way; a brother-in-law Quido Ramire of Olean; many nieces, nephews and cousins and close friends Jack and Louise Croft of Olean.

Along with her loving husband she was predeceased by her parents; 4 brothers Joseph Rubino, John Bean, twins James and Carl Bean; 7 sisters Jennie Hatch, Carmel Bean, Frances O'Connell, Angeline Post, Lucy Passerino, Louise Ramire and Theresa Karowitz.

Family and friends will be received on Wednesday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd. Olean.  A prayer service will be held Thursday (August 31, 2017) beginning with a prayer service at 9am in the funeral home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30am in St. Bonaventure Church.  Rev. James Vacco, OFM, pastor, will be the celebrant.  Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Memorials, if desired, may be in the form of a Mass Offering at any Catholic church, or made in Mrs. Grego's memory to the Alzheimer's Association of WNY, 2805 Wehrle Dr., Suite 6, Williamsville, NY 14221, St. Bonaventure Parish or to a charity of the donor's choice.
