Obituary of Lillian A. McGonigle

Lillian A. McGonigle Monroe, NC Lillian A. McGonigle, 81, formerly of Olean, passed away Wednesday (September 23, 2026) at the Monroe Health and Rehabilitation Facility in Monroe, NC after a long illness. Born February 5, 1945 in Olean, she was the daughter of George and Lillian Paugh. On April 28, 1973 she married Richard P. McGonigle who preceded her in death May 8, 2017. Lillian was raised in Olean and worked for a time as a home health care aide. She was mostly a housewife and enjoyed many friendships over the years. She was a former member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels where she was a religious education teacher, sang in the choir, and helped with Friday night bingo. She was also a Brownie leader as well as a mental health advocate, and enjoyed writing poetry. She moved to Monroe in the early 2020’s. She leaves behind three sons, Ronald (Sharee) McGonigle of Wellsville, Robert (Dara) McGonigle of FL, and Christopher O’Dell-McGonigle of Allegany; two daughters, Lillian McGonigle of Talmage, PA, and Tonya (Ahmed) Burney of Olean; many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and nieces and nephews, including Mildred Halladay of Mason who helped care for her in recent years. In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, Sean D. McGonigle in 2016, and a brother, George Paugh. Friends will be received on Friday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A funeral mass will be held Saturday (October 3, 2026) at 10am at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery. Memorials may be made to Catholic Charities.
