Obituary of Sylvia Baer
Sylvia Baer
Liberty, KY Sylvia Baer, 81, formerly of Allegany, passed away Tuesday (July 1, 2025) at the home of her daughter Kimberly in Liberty after a long illness. She had been residing with her daughter and son-in-law for the past four years.
Born July 18, 1943 in Salamanca, she was the daughter of Stanley H. and Belvias Gumienick Ligus. On September 12, 1964 at the former Transfiguration Church in Olean she married Ronald Baer, Sr., who predeceased her March 9, 2022.
Sylvia was always proud to have been a Salamanca resident in her earlier years. She was also proud to have been among the first class of students to graduate from Archbishop Walsh High School. She later attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Buffalo which led to a secretarial career, most recently at BOCES, from which she retired after many years.
She was a devout catholic and enjoyed practicing her faith at St. Bonaventure Church where she was a eucharistic minister and helped in other ways. She was also faithful to her family and along with her husband Ron, often camped and fished on weekends. She was also a “garage saler” but most importantly she treasured time spent with her grandchildren.
She is survived by a daughter, Kimberly (Daniel) Case of Liberty, KY; a son, Ronald (Amy Hedden) Baer, Jr. of Olean; grandchildren Ashlee Austin and Andy Case, both of Liberty, KY, Ronald (Brittany Ricketts) Baer, III of Olean, Ryan (Connor Charles) Baer of Cuba, and Richard “RJ” Baer of Rochester; great-grandchildren Camden and Grayson Rhodes, Delanie and Ronan Baer, and Bobby and Rhett Baer; 1 brother, Edward Ligus of Rochester, and several nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4-7pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday (July 11, 2025) at 10am at St. Bonaventure Church. Pastor Chris Emminger will be the celebrant. Burial will follow in St. Bonaventure Cemetery.
