Obituary of George T. W. Hendrix, Jr.

George T. W. Hendrix, Jr. Olean, NY George T.W. Hendrix, Jr., 92, of Olean passed away peacefully Monday (April 7, 2025). Born April 16, 1932, in Cleveland, OH, he was the son of George Tobias Whip and Kathryn Greene Hendrix. George attended St. Mary’s Parochial School and graduated from Olean High School in 1950. He attended Mercersburg Academy in Pennsylvania and graduated from Washington & Lee University in Lexington, VA, where he pitched for their baseball team for two years. He was then drafted into the US Army and served for 2 years, much of it in Germany. Upon discharge from the military, he returned to Olean telling his father he’d try out the insurance business and live in Olean for one year. That decision set the course for the rest of his life beginning a decades-long career at Both, Branch and Hendrix, Inc. and a 66-year marriage to the love of his life, Norma Henry who survives him along with their daughter Lynne (Norman) and sons Michael (Kelly), Mark (Kathy) and Toby (Diane), nine grandchildren and two great-granddaughters. George loved sports and was physically active long into retirement. In his early years, he enjoyed trout fishing with his father and attending Cleveland Indian baseball games. Over the years, he visited every Major League Baseball stadium. He skied at Holiday Valley on its second day of operations and was one of the first to experience “helicopter skiing” frequently taking trips to remote areas in the Western United States and Canada. George was a big supporter of St. Bonaventure basketball and was likely one of the Bonnies longest consecutive season ticket holders. George was a parishioner of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels and served on many boards including the Olean Rotary Club, the United Way of Olean, St. Francis hospital and the Olean YMCA. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus and Jaycee’s. George was honored as a Paul Harris member by his Rotary club and, in 2020, by the YMCA of the Twin Tiers for his commitment to the community. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Friday (April 11, 2025) at the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels at 10 am. Father Chris Emminger will be the celebrant. Burial will be in St. Bonaventure Cemetery, with military honors being accorded by the Allegany American Legion Ritual Team.
