Obituary of Gerald E. Shorter

Gerald E. "Spyder" Shorter Olean, NY Gerald E. "Spyder" Shorter, 74, of 518 N. 8th St., passed away Monday (April 19, 2021) in his home, after a lengthy illness. Born November 21, 1946 in Olean, he was the son of Clarence F. and Edith Ruth Jones Shorter. He was predeceased by his first wife, Ruth Clemons, with whom he had 2 daughters. On August 19, 1989 he married Janet Erway who survives. Gerald was a lifelong resident of Olean and attended Olean High School. He was employed for a period of time for St. Bonaventure University, and later for Burns Security at Dresser Rand. He loved watching Buffalo Bills football, NASCAR racing and St. Bonaventure basketball. He was always an Olean Huskies fan as well. Surviving besides his wife are 2 daughters Marcie Shorter of Olean and Jerri Williams of Arkansas; 3 stepchildren William Erway, Jr. of Olean, Carrie (James) Boyd of Coudersport, PA and Anthony Erway of Olean; 8 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 3 brothers John (Carmen) Hart of Hanford, CA, James Hart of Olean and Darryl (LaFonda) Hart of Strasburg, PA; 2 sisters Mary Hemphill and Linda McClain, both of Olean and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 2 brothers Robert Shorter and Clarence "CD" Shorter and 2 sisters Evelyn Bird and Laura Hilliker. The family will be present to receive friends on Saturday (April 24, 2021) from 11am until 1pm at the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd., Olean. Funeral services will begin at 1pm in the funeral home. Pastor Wes Gilbert will officiate. Burial will follow in Mt. View Cemetery, Olean.
