Capistran "Cap" G. Dominick
Olean, NY Capistran "Cap" G. Dominick passed from this life on Wednesday (December 9, 2020), after a brief illness.
An avid Bills, Sabres and Bonnies fan, he proudly wore the team colors for every game and season, even to his socks and bed sheets. Cap never met a stranger, earning him the moniker of "Mayor" of Olean. His desire to give directives was legendary and brought much energy to anyone in his circle.
Partying was big in Cap's book and he loved "having the floor". He never let any friend or family member's birthday pass without acknowledgement, and if there was a wedding or other celebration with music and dancing, he would be on the dance floor from start to finish.
At the time Cap was born, a snowy February 6, 1958, public education was not available for persons with Downs Syndrome. His beloved late parents, Walter and Leona Dominick, focused their life on meeting every obstacle as a surmountable challenge that could be overcome to give Cap a life of independence. His ability to enjoy the newspaper, particularly the sports section, was a result of his determination to teach himself to read. From the many trips to the Springville League for the Handicapped for speech therapy, and his mom pressing the Arcade Board of Education for the right to a free and public education (FAPE), Cap made gains that enabled graduation from BOCES and a dynamic start to life.
His enthusiasm for work gave him 42 productive years at SubCon, where he was passionate about earning a paycheck, sharing with any and all the details of his pay stub down to the actual check amount.
Cap was an adventurer, enjoying many trips to the New York City area, cruises, concerts, football, hockey and basketball games. He was an active participant in Special Olympics, and reveled in friends and family cheering him on. Cap took his spiritual life very seriously. He was honored to be a member of the Knights of Columbus, serving Mass and ringing the bells for many years at St. Philomena Church in Franklinville.
Life will never be quite the same for those Cap leaves behind; sisters Barbara D. (late Carl J., Jr.) George of Freedom and Anita D. (John) Brown of New Fairfield, CT; nephews Stephen (Leah) George, Nathan (Larissa Way) George, Jason (Lory) Brown, and nieces Kerry (John) Trautner, Shelley (Mark) Longo, and god-daughter Cassandra Brown, as well as much loved grand nieces and nephews, cousins and his InTandem "family".
A current member of the Basilica of St. Mary of the Angels in Olean, Cap's services will be private. For the benefit of friends and extended family, the funeral mass will be streamed on Friday (December 11, 2020) at 10:30am in the church. Please log onto http://buffalomedia.net/12112020 moments before 10:30am. Burial will be held privately in St. Patrick's Cemetery in Java Center adjacent to his parents.
A celebration of Cap's life will take place in 2021 when conditions are safe for gathering and hugging and his favorite expressions, "Holy cow" and "That hit my spot", along with memories of his antics will continue to carry his spirit forward.
Donations may be made in Cap's memory to InTandem, 1439 Buffalo Street, Olean, NY 14760.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home, Olean. Online condolences may be expressed at oleanfuneralhome.com.
