Obituary of Evelyn P. Smith

Evelyn P. "Evy" Smith "Beloved wife, mother, grandmother" Allegany, NY-- Evelyn P. "Evy" Smith of 66 N. 4th St. Allegany, NY died Sunday (October 27, 2002) shortly after arrival in the Olean General Hospital. Born December 4, 1916 in Allegany she was the daughter of Henry and Emma Hayes Putt. On July 18, 1940 in St. John’s Lutheran Church in Allegany she married William L. Smith who survives. Mrs. Smith was a 1933 graduate of Allegany Central School and was a lifelong resident of Allegany. She had been employed as a secretary to the superintendent of Allegany Central School for twenty years prior to her retirement. She was an active member of St. John’s Lutheran Church, having been its organist for 52 years. She was also a member of the church choir, the Ladies Aid Society, the Lutheran Club and the organ guild for many years. Mrs. Smith spent many years volunteering for various organizations including the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association. She and her husband celebrated 62 years of marriage in July and enjoyed twenty two years of winter retirement in Florida. Surviving besides her husband are 2 sons Marv (Donna) Smith and Tom (Kay) Smith, both of Allegany; 5 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by 3 brothers Clint Putt, Harold Putt and Armond Putt and 2 sisters Wilma Putt and Laura Hughes. Friends will be received on Tuesday from 2-4 & 7-9pm in the Casey, Halwig & Hartle Funeral Home 3128 W. State Rd. Olean. Funeral services will be held Wednesday (October 30, 2002) at 11:00am in St. John’s Lutheran Church. Rev. Gerard Lefeber, pastor, and Rev. Gerard W. Drum will co-officiate. Burial will be in Allegany Cemetery. Memorials, if desired, may be made to St. John’s Lutheran Church or to the Allegany Fire Department.
